Coordinates the strategy and deliverables for the External Affairs activities for the Columbus Zoo Family of Parks.


  • Manages the donation system by acting as point of contact for fulfillment of community donation requests. This includes processing, fulfillment, and tracking to report out annually.
  • Share External Affairs work and engagement opportunities with staff and volunteers through internal communications platforms, and with community partners through external platforms.
  • Assists External Affairs Manager to maintain strong external relationships and partnerships with municipal, county, and state elected officials, associated authorities, community leaders, and other public and private stakeholders at the Columbus Zoo Family of Parks.
  • Assists External Affairs Manager with Community Engagement Committee of the board with responsibilities that include scheduling, organizing and tracking meetings.   
  • Assists as needed in external and internal Zoo meetings related to marketing and fundraising events and other projects related to community engagement and government affairs.
  • Researches upcoming community events that align with the Columbus Zoo Family of Parks strategic mission to stay involved with the community
  • Process invoices and assists with budget tracking.
  • Analyzes current processes and procedures and makes recommendations to improve efficiencies and quality of programs. 
  • Prepares general correspondence, meeting agendas, reports, presentations and other materials.
  • Enhances the cohesiveness of a fast-paced, dynamic environment through positive attitude, strong organizational skills and superior customer service.
  • Constantly strives to further the mission of the organization and avidly supports the Columbus Zoo Family of Parks.  
  • Implements sustainable practices in daily tasks whenever possible.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field or experience working in an external affairs, government relations or community engagement role preferred.
  • Proficiency in data entry required with excellent typing speed and accuracy preferred.
  • Ability to organize information and compose written documents required.
  • Ability to professionally interact with high level community executives and donors required.
  • Ability to perform public speaking to small, medium or large groups
  • Strong computer skills with ability to be proficient in the use of MS Office software (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint)
  • Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing required.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays required.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of volunteers, donors and supporters.
  • Ability to plan and organize work in an efficient and cost-effective manner and without direct supervision required.
  • Ability to provide excellent guest service by positively interacting with guests and upholding the Make it G.R.E.A.T. standards required.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with all Zoo team members and contacts regarding company business required.
  • Ability to adhere to standard operating procedures including but not limited to safety protocols required.
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license and a good driving record required.
  • Ability to adhere to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium’s drug-free workplace policy including but not limited to pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion and follow-up treatment required.
  • Ability to successfully complete a criminal history background check annually required.
