Work with the Director of Ecology to implement the American burying beetle (ABB) program at The Wilds. Main duties include daily beetle care, breeding, releases, trapping, outreach, and research. In addition, maintain records and organization of the Beetle Barn.

10-month seasonal position (February-November) working 5 days and up to 37 hours per week

Responsibilities

  • Works with the Director Ecology to implement the American burying beetle program.
  • Assists with American burying beetle husbandry and monitoring.
  • Conducts daily field surveys and monitoring of American burying beetles and other species of burying beetles at The Wilds.
  • Provides educational information about the American burying beetle program to the public as needed.
  • Provides input to Director of Ecology on all aspects (e.g. safety, animal husbandry) of assigned areas.
  • Provide leadership to interns, apprentices, and volunteers involved with ABB program as needed (e.g. provide daily work direction, inform management of problems).
  • Attends departmental meetings and participates in developmental seminars and workshops as required.
  • Completes daily record keeping and maintains data associated with program.
  • Maintains the cleanliness and organization of the Beetle Barn.
  • Assures the safety of self, co‐workers, and visitors by observing safety guidelines when working with equipment and vehicles.
  • Constantly strives to further the mission of the organization and avidly supports the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Zoombezi Bay, Safari Golf Club and The Wilds.
  • Implements sustainable practices in daily tasks whenever possible.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required. At least 3 years completed of Bachelor’s degree in zoology, animal science, biology or relevant field preferred.
  • Insect trapping field experience required.
  • Experience with the care and husbandry of insect species required.
  • Experience using analytical software and programs such as ArcGIS or R preferred.
  • Ability to plan and organize work in an efficient and cost‐effective manner and without direct supervision required.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to provide excellent guest service by positively interacting with guests and upholding the Make it G.R.E.A.T. standards required.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with all Wilds and Zoo team members and contacts regarding company business required.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends required.
  • Ability to adhere to standard operating procedures including but not limited to safety protocols required.
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license and a good driving record required.
  • Ability to adhere to the Columbus Zoo Family of Park’s drug‐free workplace policy including but not limited to pre‐employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, and follow‐up treatment required.
  • Ability to successfully complete a criminal history background check annually required.
