The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and Zoombezi Bay’s Security Team takes great pride in our ability to maintain a safe and secure environment for our staff, guests, animal collection, and infrastructure with a high level of dedication and professionalism. Security Team Members may work at various locations throughout the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, the Parking Lot and Zoombezi Bay. Security team members operate with discipline and vigilance, focusing on observing, mitigating, and interdicting behaviors and interactions inconsistent with our organizations values and goals. Security team members constantly maintain a visible and approachable attitude, in order to meet the needs of our guests and deter unwanted behaviors. The Security team member’s ability to operate both independently and in collaboration with other team members and supporting agencies strengthens our ability to respond to all emergencies, calls for service and guest inquiries.  

Responsibilities

SHIFT

Assigned shifts may vary from week to week depending on the needs of the department, hours of operation, special events, etc.

 

PROJECTED EMPLOYMENT TIMEFRAME

Positions expected to begin on/around May 1st, 2024

 

DESCRIPTION

  • Patrols Zoo and Zoombezi Bay grounds during open and closed hours to ensure the safety of our team members and guests.
  • Patrols parking lot during open and closed hours and assists with traffic control as needed.
  • Operates Security Checkpoint to control access to the Columbus Zoo Business Complex.
  • Maintains a high profile security presence to deter criminal activity and provides good customer service to our guests and employees.
  • Performs screening procedures to ensure guest policy compliance.
  • Operates threat detection system in conjunction with bag screening procedures.
  • Locates and reunites lost children per the organization’s Emergency Response Plan (ERP).
  • Contacts the appropriate authority and attends to injured team members/guests until medical assistance arrives.
  • Coordinates with Law Enforcement or other emergency services as needed.
  • Completes incident reports in a detailed, accurate and timely manner.
  • Active participant in the Emergency Response Plan (ERP).
  • Responsible for maintaining accountability of all issued equipment.
  • Practices professional and precise communication on all Zoo radio systems.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Leadership opportunities and development may be available for qualified individuals.

Qualifications

  • 17 years of age or older.
  • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record. Subject to BMV check.
  • CPR, first aid and AED training preferred.
  • Able to pass a criminal background check prior to commencing employment.
  • Able to be alert to potentially abnormal conditions and react according to protocol.
  • Able to handle confidential information in a discreet and professional manner.
  • Able to work in varied weather conditions (i.e. heat, humidity, rain, cold).
  • Able to stand, or walk continuously for long periods of time in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to balance multiple assignments successfully.
  • Effective verbal and written communications skills required.
  • Able to maintain appropriate employee appearance per department uniform guidelines.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule including weekends and holidays.
  • Availability of 4 or more days per week preferred.
  • Able to provide excellent guest service by positively interacting with guests and upholding the Make it G.R.E.A.T. standards required.
