Overview

Education

The primary role of the Seasonal Interpretive Educator is to ensure that our guests have an engaging and safe experience while visiting the animals in selected areas of the Zoo, which may include the Kangaroo Walkabout, Lorikeet and Asia Quest Aviaries, Giraffe Feeding, Stingray Bay, Adventure Cove Sea Lion Deck, and Manatee Rescue and Rehabilitation Center. Each day will vary as you may work in a variety of these areas throughout a shift. You will encourage our guests to have safe experiences while connecting with the animals in our care through stories, conversation, and memorable experiences. These experiences can include feeding a giraffe, touching a stingray, or getting up close to a kangaroo, among others! We are looking for someone who is charismatic, good with people, proactive, works well both independently and on a team, and has a strong sense of responsibility. 

Responsibilities

  • Creates a positive guest experience by providing educational information, engaging with guests, and answering questions in Animal Areas, including Kangaroo Walkabout, Lorikeet Aviary, Manatee Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, Stingray Bay, Adventure Cove Sea Lion Deck, Asia Quest Aviary and Giraffe Feeding areas.   
  • Ensures that guests have a safe experience by sharing rules and guidelines pertaining to each location.   
  • Maintains a friendly and positive attitude towards guests and coworkers.   
  • Becomes knowledgeable about Zoo animals and related conservation initiatives, as well as animal habitats.   
  • Performs cleaning duties in Animal Contact Areas and within the Conservation Education Building.     
  • Performs other duties as assigned.  

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years old.  
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.   
  • Pursuing BA/BS or previous work-related experience in education, communication, or natural sciences preferred.   
  • Understanding the concepts of environmental education, interpretation, natural resources, and conservation.   
  • Willing to join a successful and impactful educational culture. 
  • Able to communicate well verbally to groups of all sizes and ages.   
  • Able to balance multiple assignments in a time efficient manner successfully.   
  • Able to maintain courteous and helpful behavior and work without direct supervision.   
  • Able to maintain appropriate employee appearance and follow uniform guidelines.   
  • Able to work as a team with other staff members.   
  • Able to work in varied weather conditions (i.e., extreme heat, rain) and be on your feet for the duration of a shift.   
  • Able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.   
  • New-Hire TB testing is required.   
  • Subject to Drug Free Workplace Policy.   
  • Subject to BMV check.  
  • Criminal Background check including fingerprinting is required.
