Assigned shifts may vary from week to week depending on the needs of the department, hours of operation, special events, etc. Security team members must be able to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.

 

Security team members may work at various locations throughout the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Zoombezi Bay and the Parking Lot. Working side by side with experienced full-time staff, team members focus on observing, mitigating and preventing behaviors or interactions inconsistent with our organization’s values and goals. In this role, team members will have the ability to operate both independently and in collaboration with other team members and supporting agencies to respond to all emergencies, calls for service and guest inquiries. Security team members are to provide excellent guest service while enforcing rules and policies which preserve the safety of persons and property at the Zoo and Zoombezi Bay properties.

Responsibilities

Security and Surveillance:

  • Patrols Zoo and Zoombezi Bay grounds during open and closed hours to ensure team member, guest and animal safety.
  • Patrols the parking lot during open and closed hours to ensure the safety of all team members and guests. Assists with traffic control as needed.
  • Operates Security Checkpoint to control access to the Columbus Zoo Business Complex area.
  • Maintains a high-profile security presence to deter criminal activity and provides excellent customer service to our guests and employees.
  • Operates a threat detection system (EVOLV) in conjunction with bag screening procedures.
  • Performs screening procedures to ensure guest policy compliance.
  • Completes incident reports in a detailed, accurate and timely manner.
  • Responsible for maintaining accountability of all issued equipment.
  • Always maintains the confidentiality of sensitive information.

Communication and Coordination:

  • Practice professional and precise communication on all Zoo radio systems.
  • Coordinates with Law Enforcement or other emergency services as needed.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Excellent guest service skills, positive approach to interacting with guests and upholding expectations around guest service program standards.

Emergency Response and Safety:

  • Active participant in the Emergency Response Plan (ERP).
  • Contacts the appropriate authority and attends to injured team members/guests until medical assistance arrives.
  • Assist guests and team members with security, safety issues and general information.
  • Maintains alertness to potentially abnormal conditions and responds appropriately.

Qualifications

  • Positive attitude.
  • Ability to think and act quickly with good judgement in all situations, including emergencies.
  • 17 years of age or older
  • Valid Driver’s License with good driving record. Subject to BMV check.
  • Able to pass a criminal background check prior to employment.
  • Able to work in varied weather conditions (i.e. heat, humidity, rain, cold, snow)
  • Able to stand or walk continuously for long periods of time.
  • Ability to balance multiple assignments successfully.
  • Able to maintain appropriate employee appearance per the department uniform guidelines.
  • Regular attendance.  Availability of 3 or more days per week is preferred but no less than 3 days a month required.
  • Subject to the Drug Free Workplace Policy.
  • Ability to adhere to standard operating procedures including safety protocols required.
