As a Paramedic with the Columbus Zoo Family of Parks, you’ll deliver skilled medical care to guests and staff while supporting safe, smooth park operations. From first aid responses to advanced life support, you’ll use your expertise, quick thinking, and guest‑focused approach to keep our community safe. This position pays $19 per hour!

Responsibilities

Provide first aid and emergency medical care to guests and employees in accordance with Ohio EMT or Paramedic certification standards and Columbus Zoo Family of Parks policies. This is a seasonal, non‑exempt position that supports safe park operations and delivers exceptional guest service.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Medical Response & Care

  • Respond to first aid emergencies and operate and maintain related equipment.
  • Administer competent medical care to guests and employees within required training levels.
  • Operate and maintain automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and perform defibrillation in accordance with training, certification, and established medical protocols.
  • Maintains accurate and timely medical documentation in accordance with state and organizational standards.
  • Provides medical support during peak seasonal attendance periods and special events as required.
  • Provide basic life support care in accordance with Ohio Paramedic certification standards.
  • Perform thorough patient assessments and determine appropriate interventions.
  • Administer medications as permitted by certification and protocol.

Advanced Life Support

  • Initiate intravenous (IV) access and administer IV fluids per protocol.

Operational Support

  • Staffs First Aid locations throughout the park.
  • Perform assigned safety‑related duties including area safety audits.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualifications & Certifications

  • 19 years of age or older.
  • Valid Ohio Paramedic certification.
  • Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) card.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods and to lift or move equipment and patients in accordance with EMT physical demands.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and comprehend the English language at a level necessary to perform the essential functions of the position, including accurately interpreting medical information, documenting patient care, and communicating effectively with patients, partners, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Ability to provide excellent guest service by positively interacting with guests and upholding the guest service standards required.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with all Zoo team members and contacts regarding company business.
  • Must be familiar with park layout and appropriate access routes.
  • Strong clinical judgment and decision‑making skills in high‑stress environments.

 

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Able to work in varied weather conditions (i.e., extreme heat, rain).
  • Able to maintain appropriate employee appearance (see uniform guidelines at each time clock and the employee handbook).
  • Availability to work the full seasonal period, including high‑attendance weeks, holiday schedules, and special events.

 

Schedule & Employment Conditions

  • Able to work flexible schedule including weekends, evenings and holidays.
  • This position is a seasonal role and not eligible for overtime pay.

 

Licensing, Screening & Compliance

  • Possession of a valid state‑issued motor vehicle operator’s license, and a good driving record required.
  • Proof of negative TB screening prior to commencing work and annually thereafter required.
  • Ability to adhere to the CZFP drug‑free workplace policy including but not limited to pre‑employment, random, post‑accident, reasonable suspicion, and follow‑up treatment required.
  • Ability to successfully complete a criminal history background check annually required.
  • Ability to comply with all medication handling and storage accountability procedures.
